The Ottawa Senators have traded forward Tyler Motte to the New York Rangers for forward Julien Gauthier and a conditional seventh-round pick in 2023.
If the Rangers advance past the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs, the Senators will receive a sixth-round pick, whichever is lowest between New York and the Winnipeg Jets, instead of a seventh.
The trade marks the second consecutive season the Rangers have acquired Motte before the trade deadline. Last season, New York landed Motte for a fourth-round pick in 2023.
Motte then entered free agency last off-season and signed a one-year, $1.3-million deal with Ottawa. The 27-year-old has three goals and six assists in 38 games this season.
By acquiring Motte, the Rangers have yet again added to their forward group after trading for winger Vladimir Tarasenko 10 days ago. New York is third in the Metropolitan Division as of Sunday afternoon.
The Senators, meanwhile, get a former first-round pick in Gauthier. The 25-year-old has played in parts of four NHL seasons with the Carolina Hurricanes and Rangers. This season, he has six goals and three assists in 40 games.
“Julien Gauthier is a hard-working, good skating winger with a big body who routinely goes to the opponent’s net. His north/south game should be a nice addition to our lineup,” Senators general manager Pierre Dorion said in a statement.
