The Toronto Maple Leafs beat their historic rivals 7-1 on Saturday night -- and someone who played a small role in the game will never forget it.
Jett Alexander, the goalie for the University of Toronto Varsity Blues, was signed to an amateur tryout on Saturday afternoon to back up Ilya Samsonov and got his first taste of NHL action as Toronto put the 23-year-old between the pipes for the final 1:10 of the game.
Alexander becomes the sixth amateur goalie and the second U Sports netminder to play an NHL game, with Matthew Berlin of the University of Alberta appearing for the Edmonton Oilers earlier this season.
Alexander didn't face a shot in his brief time in net — and he still has four exams to study for.
Meanwhile, the hockey world -- including Alexander's current team and former squads -- showed their support for the U of T goalie.
