Defenceman Matthew Kessel signed a two-year, one-way contract extension worth $1.6 million, the St. Louis Blues announced Wednesday.
The contract has an average annual value of $800,000.
Kessel, 23, has played 23 games for the Blues this season, recording three assists. In 34 games for the Blues’ AHL affiliate, the Springfield Thunderbirds, he scored two goals and added five assists for seven points.
A native of Scottsdale, Ariz., Kessel has spent the majority of the past three seasons in the AHL, totaling 43 points (seven goals, 36 assists) and 90 penalty minutes in 120 regular-season games.
Kessel was drafted by the Blues 150th overall in 2020 out of the University of Massachusetts, where he was part of the team that won the 2021 NCAA Championship.
