Dallas Stars goaltender Ben Bishop has been recalled from his conditioning assignment with the AHL’s Texas Stars and will remain on long-term injured reserve with a career-ending knee injury.
“It’s no secret, he has a degenerative knee injury, and he went down there, he wanted to be a big part of this,” Stars general manager Jim Nill said on Saturday. “He wanted to do everything he could to get back. In the end, by going through the process, going down there and playing, he found out that it’s the end of his career.”

Bishop was sent down on his conditioning assignment on Tuesday.
In his first game since Aug. 31, 2020 on Thursday, he allowed eight goals on 34 shots in net for Texas, but was upbeat after the game.
“It was a lot of fun to be back out there,” said Bishop. “Obviously, would have liked a little different result, but it’s been a long process, a long road to be able to get back and play in a game. Obviously, there’s still a little work to be done, a little rusty, but it felt really nice to be back out there.”
The 35-year-old has played through an injury-riddled career. Most recently, he had surgery on a torn meniscus during the short 2020 off-season and didn’t play during the 2020-21 season.
Bishop is in the fifth year of a $29.5 million, six-year contract.
