  • USA injury update: McAvoy reportedly admitted to hospital, latest on Tkachuk, Matthews

There could be bad news for Charlie McAvoy.

The Team USA defenceman was admitted to Massachusetts General Hospital on Monday while dealing with an upper-body injury, the Boston Globe reported, citing two sources.

McAvoy did not play in the team's 2-1 loss to Sweden in the 4 Nations Face-Off round-robin finale on Monday.

And the report seems to throw doubt into the Boston Bruins defenceman's status for Thursday's final against Canada in Boston.

McAvoy's big hit on Connor McDavid on Saturday was seen as a momentum changer in USA's 3-1 win over Canada in Montreal.

McAvoy isn't the only player dealing with an injury for Team USA.

USA's Sullivan gives updates on Tkachuk, Matthews, McAvoy
Team USA head coach Mike Sullivan offers updates on injured players, including Brady Tkachuk, Auston Matthews and Charlie McAvoy, following Monday's game against Sweden.

Brady Tkachuk exited Monday night's 4 Nations Face-Off round-robin finale against Sweden, while Auston Matthews and Matthew Tkachuk all didn't play in what was a meaningless game in the standings.

Coach Mike Sullivan, whose team will play Canada in Thursday's final, provided updates on some of the injured players after a 2-1 loss to Sweden.

He said Brady Tkachuk was pulled for precautionary reasons after he slammed into the post while going in on net Monday night. Sullivan said he doesn't anticipate it being an issue for Tkachuk's availability, but he also had to get more information.

Sullivan confirmed McAvoy has an upper-body injury, while Matthews "was more nicked up" and was made a late scratch. Before the game, reports indicated Matthews was expected to be fine for Thursday's final.

Matthew Tkachuk suffered a lower-body injury in Saturday's win over Canada. He said on the TNT broadcast on Monday that he expects to play Thursday.

"We're hopeful we're going to get some of those guys back," Sullivan said.
