Alex Ovechkin began his team’s road trip throughout Western Canada with a two-goal outing against the Calgary Flames on Tuesday.
His 35th and 36th of the season moved him into sole possession of fourth in the 2022 “Rocket” Richard race and he tied Jaromir Jagr for third place all-time on the NHL’s regular-season goals list.
Ovechkin came close to registering a hat trick against the Flames but a shot directed at an empty net was deflected by a Flames player.
“It's OK. I'll take it tomorrow,” Ovechkin said regarding the goal he’ll inevitably score to leapfrog Jagr.
Washington improved to 20-3-4 on the season whenever Ovechkin lights the lamp but keep in mind the team is on the second night of back-to-backs and the Capitals travelled.
The Russian superstar will look to notch goal No. 767 against the Edmonton Oilers in the featured game this week on Scotiabank Wednesday Night Hockey.
Ovechkin’s betting odds vs. Edmonton:
Anytime goal +100 | First goal +800 | Last goal +800
OVER 3.5 shots -165 | UNDER 3.5 shots +130
OVER 0.5 points -250 | UNDER 0.5 points +190
OVER 0.5 assists +135 | UNDER 0.5 assists -175
OVER 0.5 PP points +100 | UNDER 0.5 PP points -125
Oddsmakers are projecting Ovechkin is likely to register four or more shots on goal tonight. Ovechkin is averaging 4.375 shots per game this season and scoring on 14.7 per cent of his shots. He averages almost 4.7 shots per outing versus Edmonton and has added 13 goals in 19 games against them.
The only player with shorter goal odds than Ovechkin in the game is Edmonton's Leon Draisaitl (-105), who sits tied for second in NHL goals with 38.
Ovechkin has scored in three consecutive games. His only four-game goal streak this season was back in late October.
CAN MILLER EXTEND HIS HOT STREAK?
The only other game on a light Wednesday schedule is an all-Canadian showdown between the Montreal Canadiens and Vancouver Canucks, two teams streaking at the moment.
The Canucks are 7-2-0 in their past nine outings and the team has scored four or more goals in all but one of those games. J.T. Miller has been en fuego during this stretch, all while his name is being bandied about in trade rumours leading up to the March 21 deadline.
Miller has six goals and 11 assists in those nine games and will look to make it 10 consecutive games with a point.
Miller’s betting odds vs. Montreal:
Anytime goal +130 | First goal +1100 | Last goal +1100
OVER 2.5 shots +115 | UNDER 2.5 shots -145
OVER 1.5 points +130 | UNDER 1.5 points -165
OVER 0.5 assists -210 | UNDER 0.5 assists +165
OVER 0.5 PP points +140 | UNDER 0.5 PP points -180
If you’re looking at Miller’s shot market, know that he only has 20 shots on his current nine-game streak and just 50 total shots in 30 career game against the Habs.
Meanwhile, Montreal remains in 32nd place despite winning seven of its past eight games. One thing to monitor in this game is the fact each member of the top Canadiens line – Josh Anderson (+215), Nick Suzuki (+260) and Cole Caufield (+260) – boasts anytime goal odds that carry decent value against Vancouver. Suzuki has four goals in his past five games.
