When Toronto Maple Leafs forward Matthew Knies broke in on Jeremy Swayman in the second period of Game 7 on Saturday, he appeared to be tripped by Kevin Shattenkirk before crashing hard into the Boston Bruins goalie and net.

But there was no call by the refs, much to the dismay of Leafs fans.

With Knies coming out of the penalty box, he took a long step and got a step on Shattenkirk before the Bruins defenceman appeared to make contact with the puck with his stick and then taking out the Leafs forward.

However, just because Shattenkirk made contact with the puck first doesn't necessarily mean a penalty shouldn't have been called.

Rule 57.3 of the NHL rulebook states: "If, in the opinion of the referee, a player makes contact with the puck first and subsequently trips the opponent in so doing, no penalty shot will be awarded, but a minor penalty for tripping shall be assessed."

The game was scoreless when the play occurred.
