In the third period of Game 4 against the Edmonton Oilers, Los Angeles Kings forward Carl Grundstrom scored a crucial goal to give his team a 3-0 lead late in the third.
However, mayhem ensued after the goal was scored as the Oilers took exception to the play, which saw Grundstrom collide with goalie Mike Smith. As the snow settled, there was serious debate as to whether the goal should count and two reviews were needed to ultimately determine the verdict.
The first review was initiated by the NHL and looked at whether the puck entered the goal legally and wasn't pushed in by Grundstrom's glove.
Once officials determined that the goal should count on those grounds, Oilers head coach Jay Woodcroft then asked for a coach's challenge for goaltender interference. Following that review, the officials declared the goal still would count and the Oilers were given a two-minute minor for delay of game due to the failed challenge.
In a statement following the game, the NHL said contact initiated by Oilers defenceman Darnell Nurse "caused Grundstrom to contact Smith," therefore the Kings player was not guilty of goaltender interference.
The Oilers went on to lose the game 4-0. The series, now tied 2-2, returns to Edmonton for Game 5 Tuesday night.
