Some clarity regarding the NHL's salary cap for next season and beyond could be on the way.
On Hockey Day in Canada's Saturday Headlines segment, Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman reported that the salary cap for the 2025-26 season is expected to be announced before this season's trade deadline.
"We don't know the exact number for next year, it could go to $92.5 million, which is what the CBA indicates," Friedman said. "But, as we discussed before, there is room for it to go higher. Now, it sounds like teams and players are expecting some clarity on what that could like before the trade deadline."
Knowing the exact salary cap for 2025-26 is crucial for teams as they make their deadline plans.
But as Friedman reported, there is a chance that they'll be able to plan past just next season as well.
"What could be interesting here is do we get an announcement about the salary cap for more than next season," Friedman said. "Do they do it for another year, potentially two, in the future? Because the way the CBA works and the way revenues have gone, there is the ability to do that."
The NHL's salary cap for the 2024-25 was $88 million.
Set at $83.5 million last season, the $4.5 million bump was a 5.4 per cent increase, the largest the league has seen since the 2018-19 season when it increased 6.0 per cent.
