Toronto Maple Leafs winger Zach Hyman, expected to be one of the most sought-after forwards on the free-agent market, met with the Edmonton Oilers on Wednesday.
The meeting was first reported by TSN 1260’s Jason Gregor and confirmed by Sportsnet’s Chris Johnston.
Hyman is reportedly seeking a long-term contract with more than $6 million in annual salary, something the Maple Leafs would struggle to accommodate due to long-term commitments to John Tavares, Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner and William Nylander. However, Johnston reports the Maple Leafs have indicated a sign-and-trade for Hyman — which would allow the 29-year-old to sign an eight-year contract — is on the table.
The Toronto native has been a part of the Maple Leafs core for the past five seasons, providing depth scoring and some sandpaper alongside the skilled talent at the top of the lineup. Last season he had 15 goals and 33 points in 43 games while spending time on both special teams.
