Avalanche sign forward Matthew Phillips to one-year contract

The Colorado Avalanche have signed forward Matthew Phillips to a one-year contract, the team announced Friday.

Phillips recorded one goal and four assists in 28 games with the Washington Capitals this past season. He also appeared in three games with the Pittsburgh Penguins after he was claimed on waivers in February but was reclaimed by the Capitals the following month.

The 26-year-old from Calgary played with the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League as well with three goals and three assists in nine games during the regular season. He also skated in six playoff games for the Calder Cup champions.

Phillips was drafted in the sixth round, 166th overall, by his hometown Calgary Flames in 2016. He has one goal and four assists in 34 career games over three seasons with the Flames, Capitals and Penguins.
