Around the NHL: Blue Jackets recall Kent Johnson; Bad news for Kraken’s Schwartz

The Columbus Blue Jackets have recalled forward Kent Johnson from Cleveland of the AHL, the team announced Thursday.

The club also placed defenceman Damon Severson (oblique) on injured reserve. He is expected to miss at least the next five weeks.

Picked fifth overall in the 2021 NHL Draft, Johnson was sent down after posting one goal and two assists in eight games for Columbus this season.

Johnson has looked better in the AHL, picking up five goals and 10 assists in 15 games.

Johnson had 16 goals and 24 assists in 79 games last season, his first full year in the NHL.

Meanwhile, forward Cole Sillinger did not practise on Wednesday, per Aaron Portzline of The Athletic. He’s being evaluated for an injury suffered in Wednesday’s loss to the Montreal Canadiens.

Seattle Kraken

Kraken forward Jaden Schwartz (lower-body injury) will not play Thursday against the Toronto Maple Leafs, and could miss more time.

Coach Dave Hakstol said Schwartz’s injury looks more severe than day to day.

Schwartz, 31, was hurt Tuesday against the Chicago Blackhawks.

Schwartz had eight goals and seven assists in 23 games this season.

Chicago Blackhawks

The Blackhawks are going to have to wait to have forward Anthony Beauvillier as a full-time player.

Acquired in a trade with the Vancouver Canucks on Tuesday, Beauvillier is going through the visa process, Luke Richardson told reporters, per Ben Pope of the Chicago Sun-Times.

Richardson said Beauvillier will be able to play Saturday in Winnipeg against the Jets because the game is in Canada.

Meanwhile, the Blackhawks say forward Cole Guttman is day to day with an upper-body injury.

Arizona Coyotes

The Coyotes will welcome defenceman Juuso Vailimaki back to the lineup for Thursday’s game against the Colorado Avalanche, Leah Merrall of PHNX Sports reported.

Vailimaki has been out since taking a puck to the face on Nov. 14 in a game against the Dallas Stars. He had surgery to repair his mouth injury.

Vailimaki has four assists in 15 games this season.

Merrall also reported that Travis Dermott is still being listed as day to day with a hand injury.
