Bruins’ Swayman out of lineup due to illness, Rask returns … for practice

Boston Bruins goaltender Jeremy Swayman is under the weather and will not dress Thursday at home against the Buffalo Sabres, according to coach Jim Montgomery.

Swayman was not at practice and a familiar face took his place on the ice. Tuukka Rask, who played 15 seasons with the Bruins before retiring in 2022, dressed for the morning skate as an emergency backup goalie.

However, Rask will not be on the bench for game time.

Later Thursday, Boston recalled goaltender Brandon Bussi on an emergency basis from the AHL’s Providence Bruins to back up starter Linus Ullmark.

Swayman holds a 9-1-2 record, including two shutouts with a stellar 2.08 goals-against average and .932 save percentage this season.

Bussi, who has yet to make his NHL debut, has a 6-4-2 record, 2.58 goals-against average and .917 save percentage in 12 games with Providence during the 2023-24 campaign.

The Bruins (17-4-3) are second in the Eastern Conference and carry a three-game winning streak against the Sabres.
