The Montreal Canadiens have acquired the rights to defender Joel Edmundson in exchange for a 2020 fifth-round pick, the clubs announced Saturday.
Edmundson is set to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, having just completed a one-year, $3.1-million deal.
The 27-year-old posted a career-high 20 points through 68 games with the Hurricanes in 2019-20, skating an average of 18:27 per night. In the post-season, Edmundson added one goal in four games for the ‘Canes, with his average ice-time jumping to 23:41.
Edmundson won a Stanley Cup with the St. Louis Blues in 2018-19, posting seven points through 22 post-season tilts, while averaging 16:32 minutes per night.
The big-bodied Brandon, Man., native — who checks in at six-foot-four, 215 pounds — was originally drafted 46th overall by the Blues back in 2011, spending four seasons in St. Louis before being traded to the Hurricanes as part of the Justin Faulk deal last summer.
