After a career year, Quinn Hughes has won the James Norris Memorial Trophy.
The Vancouver Canucks defenceman received the award Thursday night at the NHL Awards ceremony.
Over the 2023-24 regular season, Hughes put up 92 points (17 goals and 75 assists) in 82 games and recorded a plus-minus of plus-38. He led all defencemen in points and assists and was fourth overall in the league in assists.
He received 172 of the potential 194 first-place votes, with runner-up Roman Josi received 12 and Cale Makar nine.
Edmonton’s Evan Bouchard received a second-place vote and Winnipeg’s Josh Morrissey received 19 third-place votes.
“It’s very special,” Hughes told Sportsnet’s Sean Reynolds following his win. “I think that’s because there are so many great players in the league and it’s really, really hard to win, so I just feel really grateful.”
He paid homage to his fellow nominees in his speech while receiving the trophy.
“Congrats to Roman Josi… When I think Nashville Predators I think of you,” he said. “And Cale, I probably love watching my brothers play most but I’d say you’re next on that list and I learn a lot from you.”
This is his first nomination for the Norris Trophy. He was a runner-up for the Calder Memorial Trophy following his rookie season in 2019-2020, losing the award to fellow Norris nominee Makar.
Hughes, 24, is the first Canuck in franchise history to win the Norris.
