Earlier this week, Ottawa Senators general manager Steve Staios said the team was going to target complete players and “pros” to help out the young squad.
According to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, one of those complete players on the Senators’ radar is veteran Calgary Flames defenceman Chris Tanev.
“It makes a lot of sense, when you talk about pros in the NHL, Tanev is one of the top names you come up with,” Friedman said on Hockey Night in Canada’s Saturday Headlines segment. “He makes perfect sense to be on Ottawa’s radar, and he is.”
And while the Senators are certainly interested, Friedman said the Senators may not be Tanev’s preferred destination, given their position in the standings.
“I don’t know what the possibilities of this are at this time; I think Chris Tanev would probably prefer a playoff scenario this year,” Friedman said. “For this year, the Senators are not a playoff team; we will see about the future. But I do think he’s one of the names on their radar.”
Tanev has been a popular name in trade rumours all season, and with the Flames slumping, he could be a very popular target if Calgary does decide to sell at the March 1 trade deadline.
In 45 games this season, the 34-year-old defenceman has one goal, eight assists and is a plus-7.
