Flames sign defenceman Tyson Barrie to one-year deal

Tyson Barrie‘s professional tryout agreement with the Calgary Flames appears to have been a success.

The Flames and the veteran defenceman agreed to a one-year, $1.25 million deal on Thursday, the team announced.

Barrie, 33, signed a PTO with the Flames prior to training camp. In four pre-season games with the Flames, Barrie recorded three assists.

Last season, Barrie struggled to get on track with the Nashville Predators as he appeared in only 41 games, scoring once and adding 14 assists.

But Barrie isn’t too far removed from one of his most productive seasons. In 2022-23, split between the Predators and Oilers, Barrie scored 13 goals and 55 points in 85 games. It was his fourth 50-point season.

Barrie and Flames captain Backlund are former Western Hockey League teammates with the Kelowna Rockets in 2008-09.

Flames head coach Ryan Huska coached that Rockets team to a WHL title that year.

He was drafted in the third round by the Avalanche in 2009.

Barrie won a gold medal at the 2015 men’s world championship, a silver in 2017 and another silver playing for Canada at the world junior men’s championship in 2011.

The Flames conclude their pre-season Friday against the Winnipeg Jets before opening the regular season on the road Oct. 9 in Vancouver against the Canucks.
