Hurricanes’ Andersen dealing with blood clotting issue, Halak joins on PTO

Carolina Hurricanes starting goaltender Frederik Andersen is sidelined indefinitely because of a blood clotting issue.

“During recent medical testing, it was discovered that Frederik Andersen had a blood clotting issue that needed to be addressed,” Hurricanes president and general manager said in a statement. “There is currently no timetable for his return, but we are confident that Freddie will be able to make a full recovery.”

Veteran goaltender Jaroslav Halak will join the Hurricanes at practice Monday on a professional tryout.

Andersen owns a 4-1 record this season and has a 2.87 goals-against average and .894 save percentage this season. The 34-year-old was sidelined nine days last month after taking a puck to the helmet.

Halak spent last season with the New York Rangers, going 10-9-5 with a 2.72 goals-against average and a .903 save percentage.

Both Antti Raanta and Pyotr Kochetkov have split duties the backup duties this season but have struggled. Raanta has a 3-1 record but a 3.03 GAA and a .870 SV% while Kochetkov is 0-3 with a 4.33 GAA and a .836 SV%.
