‘He did what?’: Oilers’ McDavid wows with spectacular assist, scoring record

Watch as Connor McDavid takes the puck from his own end, slices his way through two Panthers defencemen, and delivers the beauty pass to Corey Perry for the goal.

Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid said after Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Final that he wanted to drag the Florida Panthers “back to Alberta.”

In Game 5, the superstar made that a reality.

With the Oilers on the brink of elimination, trailing in the series 3-1, McDavid was up to his usual show-stopping antics in front of the Panthers’ home fans.

He started things off by assisting on Zach Hyman’s goal to start the second period, then potted one of his own when he beat Sergei Bobrovsky from a sharp angle.

But McDavid was just getting started.

His best play of the night came on the Oilers’ fourth goal when he beat one Panthers player, then knifed through two more before setting up Corey Perry for a tap-in goal at the side of the net.

With his two assists in Game 5, McDavid now has 34 assists this post-season, adding to his NHL record he set in Game 4 when he passed Wayne Gretzky’s 31 apples in the 1988 playoffs.

McDavid then added an empty-net goal as the Oilers won 5-3.

With eight points in the past two games, McDavid set a record for most points in two consecutive Stanley Cup Final contests.

He also now has 42 points in this year’s Stanley Cup Playoffs, five shy of Gretzky’s NHL record of 47.

With the hockey world all watching, social media was abuzz after McDavid’s assist. Here are some of the best reactions to the McDavid show we witnessed on Tuesday night.
