The New York Islanders will be without forward Mathew Barzal and defenceman Adam Pelech for a period of four-to-six weeks, the team said Saturday.
Barzal was placed on the long-term injured reserve as he deals with an upper-body injury.
The 27-year-old from Coquitlam, B.C., has two goals and three assists in 10 games this season. He led the team with 80 points (23 goals, 57 assists) in 80 games last season.
Pelech, who was placed on the IR, was hit in the face with a puck during Friday’s 4-3 win over the Buffalo Sabres. He has recorded four assists in 11 games this season.
Meanwhile, defencemen Mike Reilly and Alexander Romanov are both day-to-day with upper-body injuries.
Reilly left Friday’s game after he was hit hard into the boards by Buffalo’s Jordan Greenway. He remained on the ice as the team’s medical staff came out to attend to him. A stretcher was brought onto the ice, but Reilly was able to skate back to the bench with help from teammates.
The team recalled defencemen Grant Hutton and Samuel Bolduc from the Bridgeport Islanders of the American Hockey League.
New York is sixth in the Metropolitan Division with a 4-5-2 record.
