Islanders captain Anders Lee wins King Clancy Memorial Trophy

New York Islanders captain Anders Lee has been awarded the 2024 King Clancy Memorial Trophy.

The annual award is given “to the player who best exemplifies leadership qualities on and off the ice and has made a noteworthy humanitarian contribution in his community.” Lee will receive a $25,000 donation to benefit a charity of his choice as part of the award.

Lee, 33, has spent his entire 12-year career with the Islanders and is coming off his eighth 20-goal season.

Off the ice, Lee has raised money for the fight against cancer by partnering with the Jam Kancer in the Kan since 2017. Lee has hosted tournaments and events to raise money for Jam Kancer in the Kan and last year’s event raised over $155,000 including $30,000 from Lee.

Additionally, Lee invites families impacted by cancer to attend Islanders home games and he funds a holiday gift initiative for cancer families facing financial hardships.

Calgary Flames captain Mikael Backlund was the winner last season.

Each team nominates a player for the King Clancy award and the winner is chosen by a selection committee that consists of league commissioner Gary Bettman, along with former recipients of the King Clancy Memorial Trophy and the historic NHL Foundation Player Award.
