Islanders’ Ilya Sorokin may miss start of training camp due to injury

New York Islanders general manager Lou Lamoriello told reporters Friday that goaltender Ilya Sorokin could miss the first couple of days of training camp due to an upper-body injury.

Lamoriello said Sorokin was hurt during off-season workouts but the GM is not worried about the injury extending into the season.

The 29-year-old from Mezhdurechensk, Russia, posted a 25-19-12 record, 2.99 goals-against average and .909 save percentage in 56 games last season.

The Islanders turned to Seymon Varlamov for their first-round playoff series against the Carolina Hurricanes following a hot run down the stretch. Sorokin got the start in Game 3 with the Islanders down 2-0, however, he was pulled midway through the second period after allowing three goals on 14 shots. Varlamov played the remainder of the series as the Islanders were eliminated in five games.

Sorokin was drafted in the third round, 78th overall, by the Islanders in 2014 and has 95 wins including 16 shutouts over 192 career games in four seasons with the team.
