Islanders sign forward Matt Martin to one-year contract

The New York Islanders are bringing back Matt Martin.

The Islanders announced Saturday they have signed the veteran forward to a one-year contract.

Martin, 35, attended the Islanders’ training camp on a professional tryout.

The Windsor, Ont., native was drafted by the Islanders in the fifth round, 148th overall, in 2008.

He spent seven seasons with the club before signing as a free agent with the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2016. After two seasons in Toronto, Martin returned to the Islanders in a trade for goaltender Eamon McAdam.

Martin is closing in on the 1,000-game milestone having played in 955 career contests over 15 seasons.

He has recorded 176 points (81 goals and 95 assists) and 1,158 penalty minutes and ranks second all-time in hits with 3,854 since the league began tracking in 2007-08.
