The history of the Edmonton Oilers includes a long list of Hall of Famers, but none have scored more power-play goals in the orange and blue than Leon Draisaitl.
Draisaitl set the new franchise record when he scored on the man advantage during the first period of Tuesday’s 6-1 win over the Predators.
It was Draisaitl’s 127th career power-play goal, putting him one ahead of Glenn Anderson and Ryan Smythe on the franchise’s all-time list. Wayne Gretzky had 125 before he was traded to the Los Angeles Kings.
Draisaitl later extended his record with a second power-play goal in the second period. He finished the game with four points.
Draisaitl told Sportsnet’s Gene Principe after the game that he didn’t know he had set the franchise record.
“Obviously some amazing names on that list,” Draisaitl said. “I’ve got some amazing passers on that power play, they just know when I want it and where I want it. So this goes out to them as much as it is mine.”
Draisaitl had 32 power-play goals last season, which was tied for the second-most ever in a single campaign.
Alex Ovechkin is the NHL’s all-time leader with 299 power-play goals.
Beyond the power-play record, the two goals continued a string of dominance for Draisaitl against the Predators. The Oilers star now has 24 goals against the Predators — in just 24 games. It’s the most goals he’s scored against any team in the NHL.
