Maple Leafs’ Jake Muzzin back on ice, but no timeline for return

Toronto Maple Leafs defenceman Jake Muzzin was back on the ice on Tuesday for an optional skate as he continues his recovery from a concussion, but coach Sheldon Keefe says there is no timeline for his return.

Muzzin appeared to hit his head on the ice after an awkward collision with Montreal’s Chris Wideman on Feb. 21.

The 33-year-old from Woodstock, Ont., is on the long-term injured reserve list.

Muzzin has 12 points (two goals, 10 assists) and is averaging 21 minutes over 41 games this season. He also missed seven games earlier this year after sustaining a concussion during a game against the St. Louis Blues on Jan. 15, when he was hit into the end boards by Klim Kostin.

Winger Ondrej Kase (upper-body injury) and defenceman Rasmus Sandin (non-COVID illness) also were on the ice for the optional skate. Kase has missed the past four games, while Sandin has been out for the past two.

Keefe said Kase is a game-time decision for Tuesday’s home game against the Seattle Kraken, while Sandin is likely out.
