Maple Leafs’ Pacioretty avoids penalty for hit on Bruins’ Peeke after review

The Boston Bruins will be shorthanded for the remainder of Tuesday’s game against the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Midway through the opening period, Bruins defenceman Andrew Peeke was forced to leave the game with an upper-body injury after a hit from Maple Leafs forward Max Pacioretty. The team said that Peeke will not return.

Pacioretty caught Peeke with an awkward hit in the corner boards and the Bruins defenceman immediately headed off to the team’s locker room.

The hit was initially called a five-minute major for boarding, but after review, there was no penalty assessed on the play.

According to rule 20.6 of the NHL Rulebook, “referees shall review all plays that result in the assessment of any Major Penalty (other than a Major Penalty for Fighting) for the purpose of confirming (or modifying) their original call on the ice.”

After the review, the referee has the following options: “Confirming his original major penalty call, reducing his original major penalty call to a lesser penalty or rescinding the original major penalty altogether.”

Peeke, 26, has two assists in 12 games for the Bruins this season.
