Maple Leafs re-sign D Timothy Liljegren to two-year, $6M contract

Nick Kypreos, Justin Bourne and Sam McKee break down Timothy Liljegren's new deal with the Maple Leafs, debating whether the signing makes sense for the team and if the young defenceman can still elevate his game to another level.

The Maple Leafs are bringing back a piece to bolster the blue line.

Defenceman Timothy Liljegren has re-signed in Toronto on a two-year, $6-million contract ($3 million AAV), Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported on Sunday.

Liljegren, 25, had three goals and 20 assists last season in 55 regular season games. He also had one assist in six playoff games.

The Kristianstad, Sweden native has spent all five of his NHL seasons with the Leafs after being selected by the team in the first round, 17th overall, in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft.

Heading into the off-season, Liljegren was a restricted free agent with arbitration rights, which the team opted to avoid by signing the defenceman outright.
