Maple Leafs’ Samsonov, Sabres’ Comrie clear waivers, can be assigned to AHL

Toronto Maple Leafs goaltender Ilya Samsonov cleared waivers Monday and can now be assigned to the team’s AHL affiliate, the Toronto Marlies.

The 26-year-old last appeared for the Maple Leafs on Dec. 29, surrendering a 6-5 overtime loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets. He’s posted career-worst numbers this season, with a .862 save percentage and a 3.94 goals-against average.

Last season, Samsonov had a career-high .919 save percentage and a 27-10-5 record over 42 games.

Toronto signed the netminder to a one-year, $3.55 million contract after going through arbitration this past off-season.

Ahead of their upcoming road trip through California, the Maple Leafs have called up rookie goaltender Dennis Hildeby to backup Martin Jones. Joseph Woll had served as Toronto’s starter until he suffered an ankle injury on Dec. 7 in a game against the Ottawa Senators.

Meanwhile, Buffalo Sabres goaltender Eric Comrie also cleared waivers Monday. In seven games this season, the 28-year-old has a record of 1-5-0 with a 4.01 goals-against average and .863 save percentage.
