The Edmonton Oilers announced Friday they have hired former defenceman Duncan Keith as a player development consultant.

Sportsnet’s Mark Spector was the first to report the news last month.

Keith hung up his skates in July after completing his 17th season in the NHL and first with the Oilers.

The 39-year-old won the Stanley Cup three times with the Chicago Blackhawks (2010, 2013 and 2015) and also claimed the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP in 2015. He earned the Norris Trophy as the league’s top defenceman in 2010 and 2014.

Keith, who was traded to Edmonton in July 2021, recorded one goal and 20 assists in 64 games with the Oilers during his final campaign.

He finished his career having played 1,256 games in the regular season with 106 goals and 540 assists for 646 points. Keith also registered 91 points (19 goals and 72 assists) in 151 playoff games.

In his new role, Keith will meet with Oilers draft picks at the junior level plus the team’s prospects with their AHL affiliate in Bakersfield.

Edmonton also named Milan Tichy as director of amateur European scouting, Warren Rychel and Jason Pietrzykowski as pro scouts, Jeff Salajko as goaltender scout and Christian Vermette as an amateur scout.
