Oilers place defenceman Kris Russell on injured reserve

The Edmonton Oilers placed defenceman Kris Russell on the injured reserve Friday and recalled Philip Broberg from Bakersfield of the American Hockey League.

Russell left during the second period of Thursday’s 3-2 loss to the Boston Bruins with what appeared to be an upper-body injury after he was checked into the boards by Erik Haula.

The 34-year-old from Carolina, Alta., is the NHL’s all-time leader in blocked shots with 2,015 after surpassing former Chicago Blackhawks rearguard Brent Seabrook and becoming the first player to reach the milestone 2,000 last month.

He has also recorded two assists in 14 games this season.

The slumping Oilers (16-9-0) look to snap a four-game losing streak when they host the Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday night.
