Penguins acquire forward Nick Bonino from Sharks

The Pittsburgh Penguins have acquired forward Nick Bonino from the San Jose Sharks.

The Sharks get a conditional fifth-round pick in 2024 and a seventh-round pick in 2023, along with Lake Superior State NCAA defenceman Arvid Henriksson.

The Montreal Canadiens also are in the deal, getting Swedish league defenceman Tony Sund, 27 and San Jose’s fifth-round pick in 2024 for retaining 50 per cent of Bonino’s salary.

It will mark Bonino’s second go-around with the Penguins. He was part of Pittsburgh’s Stanley Cup-winning teams in 2016 and ’17.

The 34-year-old Bonino has 10 goals and nine assists in 59 games with the rebuilding Sharks this season.

Bonino, San Jose’s leader in short-handed ice time and blocked shots, is a rental with a cap hit of $2.05 million on an expiring contract.

In 820 career NHL games with the Sharks, Minnesota Wild, Nashville Predators, Penguins, Vancouver Canucks and Anaheim Ducks, Bonino has 158 goals and 195 assists for 353 points.
