Penguins’ Rust being evaluated for injury, Rakell out long term

The Pittsburgh Penguins appear to have been affected by the injury bug, as head coach Mike Sullivan provided updates on several players Tuesday.

According to the coach, Rickard Rakell will be out long term with an upper-body injury, Bryan Rust is being evaluated for a lower-body injury and Chad Ruhwedel is week-to-week with a lower-body injury.

Matt Nieto also missed practice Tuesday, but was just out for a maintenance day.

With both Rakell and Rust out, the Penguins will be left thin on the right wing.

Rackell, 30, was placed on IR. He has four assists over 17 games this season, while Rust, 31, has 16 points (nine goals and seven assists) over the same span. Each played in the Penguins’ game on Sunday against the Vegas Golden Knights.

Ruhwedel, 33, also played Sunday. The defenceman has one assist over 15 games.
