The USNTDP is once again set up to have a strong showing at the NHL Draft, and Ryan Leonard is one of the leaders of this group.
His biggest goal of the season won a gold medal for the Americans, but it was far from his only mark on the team. Leonard was a 50-plus goal man in his draft year and what you might like from an NHL perspective is that the sturdy 6-foot, 192-pound centre brings a competitive edge to his game that can increase impact and value.
Sam Cosentino and Jason Bukala share their insights on one of the top players available at the 2023 NHL Draft.
Sam Cosentino on the player: Leonard’s overtime winner in the gold medal game against Sweden at the U18 worlds capped a 17-point tournament effort, good enough for third amongst all skaters. Looking back at his entire season, he became just one of nine NTDP players to amass 50 goals in a season, finishing the campaign with 51, while adding 43 assists for 94 points. His season included a 22-game point streak in which he amassed 41 points.
Leonard comes from athletic stock. His dad John was a former NBA pick and college basketball coach. His two sisters played college basketball, while older brother John spent most of this past season in the AHL, but has played 64 NHL games over the past three seasons, split between San Jose and Nashville.
At 6-foot, 192 pounds, Ryan Leonard’s style of play leans power forward. He’s sturdy on his skates, can handle play along the boards and in the corner. A tenacious, hard-nosed player, Leonard is a worker bee with skill. Of his two other Boston College commit line mates (Will Smith and Gabe Perreault), Leonard possesses the best release and the hardest shot.
Jason Bukala’s scouting report: Threat off the rush as playmaker or shooter. He’s elusive with an elite brain offensively.
Average plus in all three zones. Tracks back reasonably well. Makes an effort to apply back pressure off offensive zone exits. Has some growl to his game and pushes back. Scores at even strength and the PP. Rises to the occasion against top flight opponents.
