The Edmonton Oilers were beat by the Buffalo Sabres twice on Saturday, yet they played only one game.
With the game in Buffalo tied up at two goals apiece at the end of regulation, the Oilers and Sabres headed to overtime.
Then, as the clock dwindled down in extra time, Sabres defenceman Owen Power scored past Oilers goaltender Stuart Skinner, appearing to secure the win for Buffalo.
The players on both teams certainly thought so as they left for their respective locker rooms, and the fans assumed the same and began to file out of the KeyBank Center.
However, after reviewing the goal, the NHL found that the play leading up to Power’s goal was offside.
As Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman put it on X, “Puck don’t lie.”
So, despite the fact that the players were likely already in the middle of changing out of their gear, they had to make their way back to the ice to finish the game.
Slowly but surely, players returned to the benches, met with a sprinkling of boos from a crowd that was starting to get impatient.
With 20 seconds put back on the clock in overtime, the Oilers had a second chance at coming away from this one with two points instead of just one.
But, ultimately, it didn’t go down in their favour the second time either.
As overtime came to a close with the game still unresolved, the teams headed to a shootout. After each side scored once on their first two chances, Sabres forward Alex Tuch scored. And this time around, it was for real.
The Oilers will have a chance to redeem themselves on Sunday when they visit the Pittsburgh Penguins to cap off their three-game road trip.
