Forwards Sam Gagner and Brandon Sutter have signed professional tryout agreements with the Edmonton Oilers, the team announced Monday.
This marks the third stint with the Oilers for Gagner, who was drafted sixth overall by the team in 2007. In 402 games with the team in his first go-around, he had 88 goals and 158 assists for 246 points. Gagner, a London, Ont., native, also played 61 games for the Oilers during the 2018-19 season (10-12-22) before being traded late in the 2019-20 season.
Gagner, son of former NHLer Dave, had a historic eight-point night for the Oilers in February 2012, when he scored four goals and added four assists in an 8-4 win over the Blackhawks. He finished that season with a career-high 18 goals, plus 29 assists, for 47 points in 81 games.
Gagner also played with Arizona, Philadelphia, Columbus, Vancouver, Detroit and, most recently, Winnipeg. The right-shooting forward has 192 goals and 327 assists for 519 points in 1,015 games over 16 seasons.
Sutter, the Carolina Hurricanes’ first-round pick (11th overall) in 2007, has 152 goals and 137 assists for 289 points in 770 games over 13 NHL seasons. He has also played for the Canucks and Penguins.
Sutter, 34, is the son of former NHLer Brent and has not played since the end of the 2020-21 season, during which he contracted COVID-19 while with the Canucks. He has been sidelined since with long-COVID symptoms.
