As far as second periods go, Ottawa Senators netminder Joonas Korpisalo likely just had the worst of his career.
Coming out up 2-0 over the Metropolitan Division-leading New York Rangers on Saturday, the Senators were in pretty good position to start the middle frame. They were then dealt their first blow, courtesy of Alexis Lafreniere, followed by a Chris Kreider snipe, then a third just 39 seconds after.
Korpisalo wasn’t able to stop the bleeding, allowing one more to hit the back of the net before head coach Jacques Martin ended his night early. In total, Korpisalo allowed four goals on four shots, before Mads Sogaard came in as relief.
The 29-year-old Finnish goalie has struggled mightily since joining the Senators, posting the second-worst goals against average (3.44) and save percentage (.888) of his career. His only season worse than this was 2021-22 with the Columbus Blue Jackets.
Korpisalo was signed by former general manager Pierre Dorion to a five-year, $20-million deal, which contains a modified no-trade clause until his contract expires at the end of the 2027-28 season.
