Most people don’t consider Monday their favourite day of the week, but sports fans are in luck.
The first day of the traditional work week features the 31st sports equinox in history — a rare night when the NHL, MLB, NFL and NBA all have games.
The best part is many of the games are marquee matchups.
Start with baseball where Shohei Ohtani (assuming he’s healthy enough) and the Los Angeles Dodgers try to take a 3-0 stranglehold in the World Series against Aaron Judge and the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium (7 p.m. ET / 4 p.m. PT on Sportsnet).
On the ice, we have an eight-pack of NHL games, highlighted by the Winnipeg Jets trying to improve to 9-0 when they host the Toronto Maple Leafs. Also, Steven Stamkos makes his much-anticipated return to Tampa as the Lightning entertain the Nashville Predators.
Two solid late games cap the NHL action — the Vancouver Canucks hosting the Carolina Hurricanes and the Vegas Golden Knights welcoming the Calgary Flames. (Both those games are on Sportsnet at 10 p.m. ET / 7 p.m. PT.)
On the hardwood, Canadian Jamal Murray, reigning MVP Nikola Jokic and the Denver Nuggets are in Toronto to battle the Raptors.
It’s one of 11 NBA games, with other highlights being the Boston Celtics against the Milwaukee Bucks and the Los Angeles Lakers tangling with the Phoenix Suns.
Finally, the NFL Monday nighter has the surprising Pittsburgh Steelers hosting the struggling New York Giants. The Steelers have won a whopping 21 Monday night games in a row.
What’s more, there are even two MLS playoff games on the Monday docket.
Barring a World Series rainout, this will be the lone sports equinox this year.
The first sports equinox took place in 1971.
