Dallas Stars forward Mason Marchment has been fined $5,000, the maximum allowable under the CBA, for interference on Toronto Maple Leafs‘ Jake McCabe, stemming from an incident during Wednesday night’s game.
The hit happened in the dying minutes of the second period as the Stars were on the power play. McCabe, on the penalty kill, was attempting to clear a puck along the side boards when Marchment laid a hit just as McCabe was turning around, appearing to make contact with the head.
There was no penalty called on the play, though McCabe was visibly cut and bleeding.
After the game, which the Maple Leafs won 5-4, teammates were dismayed at the non-call, with forward Mitch Marner calling it “mind-boggling.”
“I see a vulnerable player who is targeted,” Keefe said to reporters after the game. “I think that is a hit they do not want to see in the game. [The] guy is bleeding everywhere, needs stitches. I’m sure they’re going to look at it.”
The Maple Leafs and Stars will not play each other again this season.
Marchment, 28, has appeared in 50 games for the Stars this season, with 16 goals and 23 assists. He’s on pace to exceed his career-high in goals and points, set in 2021-22 with the Florida Panthers.
An undrafted free agent, Marchment was signed by the Toronto Maple Leafs to a minor-league contract in 2016.
