‘What a series’: Sports world salutes Oilers, Panthers after epic Stanley Cup Final

Bring on the rats.

By the skin of their teeth, the Flordia Panthers have won the first Stanley Cup in franchise history after claiming a 2-1 win in Game 7, stopping the Edmonton Oilers‘ historic comeback on Monday night.

Sergei Bobrovsky stepped up when Florida needed him, Carter Verhaeghe and Sam Reinhart found the back of the net and the Panthers held off a furious Oilers attack in the third period to claim the Cup.

On the other side of Florida’s victory comes the disappointment from Edmonton’s loss, as the Oilers become the seventh Canadian team to lose in the Stanley Cup Final since 1993.

Despite coming one game from becoming just the second NHL team to complete a 3-0 comeback in the Cup Final, the Oilers couldn’t finish their bid for history.

Once the final buzzer sounded, fans from across the sports world took to social media to congratulate the Panthers on their hard-fought championship.
