The future looks bright for Calgary Flames prospect Zayne Parekh.
With his first-period goal on Thursday night for the Saginaw Spirit, Parekh reached the 100-point plateau in just his 57th game of the season, making a bit of history in the process.
Parekh became just the 10th OHL defenceman to reach the century mark in a season, and the first to do so since Ryan Ellis in 2010-11.
With six games remaining on Saginaw's schedule after Thursday's contest against the Barrie Colts, Parekh has a chance to continue climbing his way up the record books for single-season scoring by defencemen.
He is just three points away from taking sole possession of the sixth-best season. The record was set by Bryan Fogarty with the Niagara Falls Thunder in 1988-89.
Thursday's goal was Parekh's 32nd of the year and comes shortly after he tied a record held by none other than Bobby Orr. When Calgary's first-rounder buried his 30th of the season on Sunday, he joined Orr as the only two defencemen to score 30 or more goals in multiple seasons in OHL/OHA history.
Selected by the Flames ninth overall in last summer's draft, Parekh helped the Spirit win the Memorial Cup on home ice last year.
Saginaw entered play Thursday fourth in the Western Conference with a 35-23-2 record.
