After a wild post-game scene, the OHL is making the Ottawa 67's and Kingston Frontenacs dig into their bank accounts.
The Frontenacs have been fined $3,500 for coach Troy Mann's "inappropriate verbal engagement with the opposing team, leading to confrontational actions in the dressing room area following the conclusion of the game" on Sunday, the league announced on Thursday.
The 67's, meanwhile, will pay the league $2,500 for coach Dave Cameron’s "inappropriate actions seeking confrontation around the dressing room area following the conclusion of the game."
Postmedia Ottawa's Don Brennan reported the two veteran coaches, both of whom used to work for the Ottawa Senators organization, had to be held back by off-ice officials after Kingston's 3-2 overtime win.
The disagreement stemmed from the finish of the game between the geographical and divisional rivals. Kingston's Tuomas Uronen, a former 67, scored with 2.8 seconds left in overtime and held a finger to his lips to signal that he had silenced the Ottawa crowd.
Brennan reported that 67’s defenceman Matthew Mayich stood close to the Frontenacs' on-ice celebration, which caused Mann to speak to the player.
This apparently angered Cameron.
“I take exception to adult coaches yelling at players,” Cameron told Postmedia. “That’s all I’m going to say.”
Mann acknowledged he did have a word with Mayich.
“Mayich was just kind of standing around, and I said, ‘Can you just go, leave the guys alone?’ Like, why is he standing 10 feet from our team? I’m allowed, as a head coach, to tell those guys, ‘Go see your own guys.’ He started chirping me, and that was it. I came off," Mann said.
Minutes later, things got heated outside the dressing rooms.
Before they eventually retreated, Brennan reported Mann shouted: “Nice (bleeping) job at the world juniors, Cameron."
Cameron was the coach of a Canadian team that lost in the quarterfinals to Czechia at this year's world junior championship in Ottawa.
Cameron is a former Senators head coach, while Mann is an ex-coach of the AHL's Belleville Senators.
The Frontenacs are third in the Eastern Conference, while the 67's are ninth entering the final four days of the season.
