Canada joins Australia in Group A for men's basketball at Paris Olympics

Canada is in for a serious test right off the bat as they'll take on the highly rated Australia in Group A at the 2024 Paris Olympics men's basketball tournament.

Rounding out the foursome will be the two winners of the Olympic Qualifying Tournaments taking place in Spain and Greece in early July.

The superstar-laden American squad was put into Group C with Serbia, South Sudan and the winner of the qualifying tournament in Puerto Rico. They'll try for their fifth straight gold medal and redemption for a fourth-place finish at the FIBA World Cup.

Group B will feature host nation France, World Cup winner Germany, Japan and the winner of the Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Latvia.

The full groups for the 12-country high-profile hoops tourney were revealed on a YouTube FIBA broadcast on Tuesday. NBA and USA Basketball legend Carmelo Anthony drew the groups for the men's tournament.

They were drawn according to a pot system based on each team's global ranking and geography. Due to Canada's No. 7 ranking, they were placed into Pot 3 along with host nation France and the yet-to-be-determined winner of the Olympic Qualifying Tournament in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

The final teams to round out each pot will be determined by qualifying tournaments taking place from July 2-7.

Canada qualified for the Olympics after beating then-world No. 1 Spain in the quarterfinals of the FIBA World Cup in the summer of 2023. It's their first appearance since the Sydney games in 2000.

After playing against one another in the group stage, the top two teams from each group and the two best third-place teams will move on to the quarterfinals. The tournament will then follow a simple knockout stage format.

The group stage will take place in Lille, France.

It will all tip off on Saturday, July 27, and the women's gold medal game is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 11 at Bercy Arena in Paris.
