Canada's Brad Gushue loses Olympic semifinal, will play for bronze

Canada’s Brad Gushue is out of gold-medal contention at the Beijing Olympics.

Sweden’s Niklas Edin stole one in the 10th end to beat Gushue 5-3 in the semifinals on Thursday.

Gushue will play reigning Olympic champ John Shuster of the United States in the bronze-medal game on Friday at 1:05 a.m.

Edin faces Great Britain’s Bruce Mouat for gold on Saturday.

With the hammer in the 10th end, Gushue attempted a runback double for the win instead of a draw to send it to an extra end.

Gushue just missed, allowing Edin to escape with the win.

The Canadian skip put his hands over his head after the near miss, which ended his chances of winning a second Olympic title following a triumph in Turin in 2006.

The result means Canada will not win an Olympic curling gold for the first time since 2002 — and could be shut of the medals entirely for the first time since the sport returned to the Winter Games program in 1998.

Gushue’s loss ended a rough day for Canadian curling.

Earlier, Jennifer Jones was ousted from medal contention when all three results in other games in the final round-robin draw did not go her way, eliminating the Canadians.

The Canadian mixed doubles team of Rachel Homan and John Morris also missed the semifinals earlier in the Olympics.
