Canadian Sarah Mitton was eliminated in the Olympic women's shot-put final on Friday after dropping to 12th after three throws in slippery conditions.
Mitton’s best throw was 17.48 metres, well back of the leaders after a hard rain fell. She looked to have a made a throw around the 20-metre mark, but fouled out when she lost her balance and stepped out of the ring.
Germany's Yemisi Ogunleye ultimately won gold with a throw of 20.0 metres, New Zealand's Maddison-Lee Wesche (19.86) took silver, and China's Jiayuan Song (19.32) won bronze.
"I went in with everything to lose and that's exactly what I feel like happened," Mitton told CBC Olympics. "But I'm very proud of myself. It stings to know it was within reach and that I have to wait four more years."
The Nova Scotian had the best score during qualifying with a throw of 19.77 metres. She won silver at this event at last year's world championships.
When asked what she wanted to tell her supporters at home, Mitton teared up and said: "I just want to say thank you so much. I wish I could have done it for you. But the love and support I have received is just amazing."
