One of Canada's top Olympic medal contenders appears to be in peak form ahead of the Paris Games.
Ethan Katzberg won gold in the men's hammer throw at the Kip Keino Continental Tour in Kenya with a throw of 84.38 metres on Saturday, the best distance by anyone in the event since 2008.
Katzberg's previous personal best was 81.25 metres to win gold at last year's world track and field championships.
The world record is 86.74 metres by Yuriy Sedykh of Russia in 1986.
The 22-year-old Katzberg, from Nanaimo, B.C., also won gold at last year's Pan American Games and silver at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
The Canadian Olympic track and field trials are June 27-30 in Montreal.
The Olympic hammer throw competition is Aug. 2 and 4.
