Canada was unable to repeat its bronze-medal-winning performance from five years ago in the women’s rugby sevens event at the Tokyo Olympics.
After finishing third in Rio in 2016, the Canadian squad failed to qualify to the tournament’s quarterfinal in Japan, closing out the group round with a 1-2 record following a 31-0 loss to France in the final match. Canada now faces Kenya in a placement match on Friday.
The women’s team defeated Great Britain in 2016 to secure bronze as the sport made its Olympic return after 92 years.
