World No. 1-ranked men's tennis player Jannik Sinner has withdrawn from the upcoming Paris Olympics with tonsillitis, he announced in a social media post on Wednesday.
The 22-year-old Italian began his rise to the top of the ATP standings after winning his first Grand Slam title at the Australian Open — a win that included an upset victory over former world No. 1 Novak Djokovic. He moved into the top spot after reaching the quarterfinals at Roland Garros.
Sinner most recently advanced to the quarterfinals of Wimbledon before bowing out to Daniil Medvedev.
Tennis matches are set to begin at the Olympics on Friday and run through Aug. 2.
