At 13 years old, Japan’s Momiji Nishiya has etched her name in history, earning the first-ever gold medal in Olympic women’s skateboarding in Tokyo.
An Osaka native, Nishiya finished atop the competition with a score of 15.26, taking the lead in her second-last trick and never looking back.
Another 13-year-old, Brazil’s Rayssa Leal, won silver with a score of 14.64, and rounding out the podium was another Japanese skater, Funa Nakayama, whose score of 14.49 gave her bronze.
On Saturday night, Japan had already claimed a spot in skateboarding history, with Yuto Horigome becoming the first-ever Olympic gold medallist in the sport.
