An exhibition men’s basketball game ahead of the Tokyo Olympics between the United States and Australia has been cancelled “out of an abundance of caution.”
The game had been scheduled for Friday night in Las Vegas.
Earlier Thursday, USA Basketball announced Wizards star Bradley Beal would miss the Games due to health and safety protocols while Pistons forward Jerami Grant had also entered protocols “out of an abundance of caution.”
The U.S. and other teams have been holding training camp in Vegas ahead of next week’s Olympics and both Beal and Grant had played in three prior exhibition games against Nigeria, Australia and Argentina. According to Charania, a final exhibition game between the U.S. and Spain remains scheduled for Sunday.
The Olympics open on July 23. Japan’s safety protocols for the Olympics include the provision that all athletes and coaches must test negative for COVID-19 72 hours before their departure to the country and take another test when they arrive.
