Bencic to face Vondrousova for women’s singles gold medal in Tokyo

Switzerland’s Belinda Bencic will face Czech Marketa Vondrousova for the women’s singles gold medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

Bencic on Thursday held on to beat Kazakhstan’s Elena Rybakina 7-6(2), 4-6, 6-3 and advance to the women’s singles final in Japan.

No. 12 in the WTA rankings, Bencic will face Vondrousova, who beat Ukranian star Elina Svitolina 6-3, 6-1 in their semifinal match on Thursday.

Svitolina is just the latest name on Vondrousova’s list of upsets. Earlier this week, the 22-year-old World No. 42 eliminated Japan’s wunderkind Naomi Osaka 6-1, 6-4 in the third round.

Rybakina and Svitolina will play for bronze. All medal matches are scheduled for the upcoming weekend.
